The Swiss lever is a lever escapement with a fork, two pallets, a roller and an impulse jewel. It is in nearly every mechanical wristwatch because it self-starts, survives shocks, and can be adjusted.

The beat, in order

  1. The balance's roller jewel enters the fork's notch and pushes the fork.
  2. The fork's entry pallet slides off the escape wheel tooth — the unlocking.
  3. The wheel drops onto the impulse face — the drop.
  4. The wheel pushes the pallet, the fork pushes the jewel, and the balance is impulsed.
  5. The exit pallet locks the next tooth and the balance swings free until the next beat.

Why this escapement won

It self-starts, which the detent does not. It survives a knock, because the fork is held by banking pins rather than by a delicate detent. And every one of its errors can be adjusted after assembly, which means it can be regulated into a good rate rather than being built into one. Those three properties, not accuracy, are why it is in almost every mechanical watch.

The lever's disadvantage is that the balance is in contact with the escapement while being impulsed, so the balance's own poise and the fork's geometry both enter the rate. That is what position regulation is correcting.

Boundary: Swiss lever, English lever and pin pallet

A pin pallet escapement uses steel pins instead of jewel pallets and wears faster, and it appears in inexpensive movements. An English lever arranges the wheel and pallets differently. A Swiss lever is a specific arrangement, and the name is a description of geometry rather than a claim about where it was made.

The misreading worth naming: reading "lever escapement" as "Swiss lever". Most lever watches are Swiss-pattern, and the phrase on a specification sheet usually means the arrangement, not the country of origin.

The bench's position

The bench holds that the lever escapement's contact during impulse is the single largest source of position error in a normal watch, and that this is why six-position regulation works at all. Remove the contact and the positions converge; that is the detent's advantage and the lever's price.
