Steps

  1. Identify the escapement from its geometry, not from a description. A wheel with vertical teeth is a verge; a wheel driving a fork from the side is a lever.
  2. Place it on the adoption sequence. This gives a window measured in decades, which is the honest precision of the method.
  3. Look for the transition cases. An early anchor and a late verge overlap, and so do a late anchor and an early deadbeat.
  4. Use everything else to narrow the window: the presence of jewels, the type of regulator, the material of the spring, the layout of the bridges.
  5. Write the window down as a range. A single year from an escapement alone is a guess dressed as a fact.

Why the window is decades and not years

Escapements were adopted gradually and stayed in production for a long time after a better form appeared. A verge clock could be made in 1800, and a deadbeat clock in 1930. The escapement tells you what the maker was willing to build, and the rest of the object tells you when.

The bench holds that dating by escapement is best used as a coarse filter that eliminates centuries, and that anyone quoting a year from an escapement alone is over-reading the evidence.
