In-house is used to mean two different things: that the brand designed and built the movement, or that the brand owns the process up to some threshold. The same movement can be both and neither.

Why the word is doing two jobs
One definition is about design and production: the brand conceived the movement and made it. The other is about finishing and ownership: the brand owns the design and finishes a base it did not make. Both are used in marketing, and a specification sheet rarely says which one it means.

Why it matters less than the escapement
The bench's standing argument is that the escapement sets the character and the oscillator sets the rate, and that both are properties of a design rather than of its owner. A well-designed bought escapement will out-perform a poorly designed in-house one, and the label tells you nothing about which you have.
The bench holds that in-house is a provenance claim and should be read as one, and that a movement should be judged on its escapement, its rate in six positions, and its documented service interval. That position is contestable, and it is the reason this page exists.
What to ask instead
- Which escapement, and what is its geometry?
- What rate is guaranteed, in which positions, and how is it measured?
- What is the documented service interval, and what does a service include?
- Is the lift angle published, so a timing reading can be checked?
